External Wall Insulation & Cladding

External wall insulation. Drops the heating bills, tidies up the look of the house.

External Wall Insulation & Cladding in Motherwell and Lanarkshire — Surma Joinery

What's included

  • Site survey — wall condition, downpipes, sills, gas pipe positions
  • EWI board (typically 90mm) fixed glue-and-stud to existing wall
  • Extension of sills, downpipes, gas pipe brackets, lighting blocks
  • Reinforcing mesh, base coat, finish render (1.5mm acrylic standard)
  • Decorative or weatherboard cladding where the spec calls for it

EWI does two things. It drops heating bills by stopping the heat leaving through the brickwork. And it gives an old house a finish-quality exterior — render, cladding, or both — that adds noticeably to kerb appeal and resale value.

We have done full-house installs in Linlithgow, partial-wall jobs on traditional Lanarkshire semis, and timber-clad feature walls on new builds. It is unforgiving work — the wall behind has to be sound, the weather window has to be right, and the detailing around sills, pipes and lighting has to be planned before any board goes on. Done properly it lasts thirty years.

Our process

  1. 01

    Survey

EWI is unforgiving — it has to be installed onto a sound, dry, well-prepared wall. We survey the existing fabric and the surrounding fittings before quoting.

  2. 02

    Fixed quote

Quote lists materials, fixings, finish spec, and how long the render will take to cure (which is weather-dependent in Scotland).

  3. 03

    Install

Boards on, mechanical fixings, mesh, base coat. Sills, pipes, lighting all extended. Final finish render or cladding goes on last.

  4. 04

    Make good

Drains and paths cleaned. Decorator-ready, or paint-finished on top of the render to your colour.

What customers say about our external wall insulation work

  • I would highly recommend Rafal. I cannot put into words how amazing his work was — to tell you the truth I had contacted around 40 joiners to help develop my nursery's outdoor garden in building an outdoor cosy reading area for our children to relax and enjoy stories, songs and other learning experiences. The only person that actually did what they said was Rafal, without any hesitation and made it a priority not a problem. Rafal was very professional and incredibly kind, genuinely caring. Without any payment he did the job from start to finish with gratitude and appreciation, taking pride in his work to help our children and families within our local community. We can now provide an outdoor shelter space for our children to learn and grow. If you want someone you can trust, who's reliable, honest, hard working and incredibly talented, then Rafal is the person you need.

  • We have delayed doing work inside and outside our home after some bad experiences with trades. However we are so delighted to have found Rafal. The work Surma have carried out for us has been excellent. Rafal did fantastic work, a very thorough and skilled craftsman. Work done inside and outside. Thoroughly recommended. Thanks again Rafal.

  • Rafal has restored my faith in tradespeople! What a refreshing experience. Rafal fitted our kitchen, including cabinets, oak worktops, cupboards, shaker door on utility cupboard, bathroom door and cladding under the stairs to a very high standard. Rafal and his colleague both had great work ethics, were very professional and arrived on the dates and times arranged and had lots of energy and enthusiasm to bring to the project. He also checked in frequently to make sure we were happy with the work so far. Very reasonably priced for the standard of work and I don't think I could use anyone else going forward. Thanks Rafal and team.

Frequently asked

How long does EWI take?
Three to four weeks for a typical semi-detached. Adhesive and render both need dry weather to cure properly — we will not push them in mid-winter just because the diary says so. Better to wait a fortnight than to have the render fail.
Will it improve my EPC rating?
Usually yes, often by one or two bands. It is the single biggest fabric improvement most houses can make. Combined with loft insulation it transforms how warm the house feels.
Do you do cladding as an alternative?
Yes — timber cladding (vertical, horizontal, charred, painted), composite cladding, or render-only without insulation underneath. Choice depends on look, budget, and whether thermal improvement is also a goal.
Are there grants for EWI?
The Scottish Government runs warmer homes schemes that may part-fund EWI for eligible homes. Worth checking before you start. We can point you at where to apply.
Can EWI cause damp problems?
It can if installed badly — onto a wet wall, or without proper detailing at sills and ventilation. Done properly, it makes the wall warmer on the inside surface and reduces condensation. Survey-first is the difference.
