Flooring

New boards, ply overlays, repairs. Everything that sits under the finish.

Flooring in Motherwell and Lanarkshire — Surma Joinery

What's included

  • Lift and dispose of failed flooring (boards, ply, laminate)
  • Joist inspection and strengthening where boards have been over-spanned
  • New softwood or hardwood floorboards, screwed and counter-bored
  • 6mm or 12mm plywood overlay for engineered wood, tile or vinyl finishes
  • Targeted board replacement after leaks or rot — match existing rather than replace whole floor

Most flooring problems are subfloor problems. Springy boards, gaps that open and close with the season, an engineered floor that telegraphs every join — the cause is usually below, not on top.

We work below the decorative finish. New boards where the old ones are past saving, plywood overlay where the finish needs it, targeted repairs where a small section has failed. The room ends up ready for whoever is laying the carpet, the wood, or the tile.

Our process

  1. 01

    Lift and look

Most subfloor problems are not visible until the existing finish is up. We lift a section, see what is underneath, give you a real quote rather than a guess.

  2. 02

    Strengthen the bones

If joists are sagging or notched too deep for cabling, we sister or noggin before any new board goes down. The finish floor is only as flat as what is under it.

  3. 03

    Lay and fix

New boards or ply overlay screwed at every joist. Joints staggered. Ready for whatever decorative finish you have planned.

Frequently asked

Can you save my existing floorboards rather than replace them?
Usually yes. Old boards have character new ones do not — and pulling them up is wasteful if they are sound. We sand, fix splits, replace damaged boards individually with matched timber.
Do I need plywood under engineered wood or LVT?
Almost always. Most engineered and LVT finishes need a perfectly flat substrate or you will see the joins through. 6mm ply on screwed centres solves it.
You only do the subfloor — not the finish?
Right. We do boards, joists, ply. We do not lay decorative engineered wood, tiles, or carpet — that is a specialist trade and you will get a better result from a flooring specialist. We will leave you a perfect substrate for them.
How long does a typical floor replacement take?
A single room in a day or two. Whole floors of a 3-bed semi run three to five days. Add a day if we are also strengthening joists.
