Stylish Black Cladding for a Modern Wall Design

A small but well-spec’d job. The client had been holding onto a limited run of black cladding boards that were no longer in production. They wanted a feature wall, but knew the math was tight — there was just enough timber, and only just.

The challenge

When the material is finite, joins go in non-standard places. The usual rule is to stagger joins by at least 300mm and never put one within 600mm of a corner, but with this stock we had to break that rule in two places. The fix is making the joins land where the eye doesn’t immediately go — never centred, never repeating at the same height.

What we did

Set out the wall in chalk first, plotted every board including the joins, adjusted the layout twice to push joins into the lower third of the wall and off-axis from each other. Fixed and finished in a single visit.

The result

A feature wall that reads as designed, not improvised. The joins are visible if you go looking, but no-one ever does.

Materials

  • Black timber cladding (client-supplied, limited stock)
